Hi everyone, We are very privileged to have Jim Buckner as our guest speaker at our December, 2009 meeting. Jim has been in photography for a long time, and he has a great passion for the Mac and photography. About Jim: Jim Buckner is a photohobbyist whose parents were part-time professional photographers. His first camera was a Kodak Brownie and then he graduated to a Pony. He is proficient in the use of iPhoto and Photoshop and also employs Painter, Sketch, FotoMagico and PhotoArtist in his works. About the presentation: In minutes, the editing features of iPhoto allow graphical corrections, photo enhancements and artistic adjustments that formerly took hours in the darkroom. Establishing a workflow routine, laying out a workspace and demonstrating some helpful tips will be the subjects of this presentation. To learn more about Jim’s work, see his web site (made on a Mac, of course!): http://www.jlbuckner .com The event logistics: Wednesday, December 1, 2009 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. The Apple Store 679 N. Michigan Avenue Chicago, IL 60611 I look forward to seeing many of you there! Best wishes, Rss Conte Coordinator, Chicago Mac Meetup Group

Hi everyone, Our special guest for our November, 2009 Mac Meetup is Bob "Dr. Mac" LeVitus. His books have sold over 1,000,000 copies, and he is certainly one of the best evangelists for all things Apple and Mac of all time. He has published articles in many Mac magazines, but he is best known for giving outstanding information in an extremely accessible way. Many people consider Bob's annual visit to be the highlight of the year, and we are always thrilled to bring him in. Bob is one of the very few select members of the Macnotables, which can be found here: http://www.macnotabl es.com Bob's own web site, where he gives out some of the best free info available, as well as opens his business for consulting, is here: http://www.boblevitu s.com Bob's books are available on his web site, or on Amazon. Bob is funny, incredibly smart, and able to share his skills and expertise with virtually any level of Mac or iPod user. It really is a treat to have him come to Chicago! Hi everyone! Sorry for the short notice! We are very pleased to have a representative from Apple, Inc show us Snow Leopard and MobileMe this Wednesday, October 7, 2009. I'm sure many of you are aware of Snow Leopard and MobileMe, but may not be aware of some of the specifics. Here's your chance to see them up close and personal, without having to buy the disks, and ask questions of a representative from Apple, Inc., directly. Snow Leopard is the latest OS from Apple, and has a lot of "under the hood" improvements, such as 64 bit computing, QuickTime is quite different, and a lot of the OS is now written in Coca, instead of the legacy code. Should you upgrade? That depends! As usual, just because the OS is new, does NOT mean that all the plug-ins we use are up to date and bug free, and some upgrades (such as EyeTV from Elgato) are going to cost you a few dollars to upgrade to the Snow Leopard version. MobileMe is Apple's bundled "cloud" software set. It can be used as a backup system (I use it as one of my backups myself), for syncing your mail / contacts / address book, even finding your iPod. Again, this Wednesday will be a clear opportunity to ask questions and see MobileMe running on Snow Leopard, and see if it is right for you. My apologies again for the late notice! I hope to see many of you at the event. Here are the logistics. Wednesday, October 7, 2009 7:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m. The Apple Store 2nd Floor Theater 679 N. Michigan Avenue Chicago, IL 60611 Feel free to bring friends, switchers, colleagues, and anyone else who might be interested. We'll be going out to eat afterward at Elephant and Castle. I hope to see many of you this Wednesday! Sincerely, Russ Conte Chicago Mac Meetup Organizer

Hi everyone, Our August Mac Meetup will be with Mac developer Dave Chmura. He has developed one of the best tools for podcasting, called Profcast. As Dave explains it, "ProfCast is a versatile, powerful, yet very simple to use tool for recording lectures including PowerPoint and/or Keynote slides for creating enhanced podcasts. ProfCast provides a low cost solution for recording and distributing lectures, special events, and presentations as podcasts. ProfCast offers an integrated workflow that makes creating, recording, and publishing podcasts easy. It's as simple as Launch, Load, and Lecture." This is useful for both business (which does a lot of presentations) and education. Anyone with an interest in recording and sharing presentations is encouraged to attend this free and open event. Dave maintains a web site, which is here: http://www.profcast. com/public/index.php You can see examples of Profcast in action here: http://www.profcast. com/profiles/index.p hp The logistics for this event are: Wednesday, August 5, 2009 7:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m. The Apple Store 679 N. Michigan Avenue 2nd Floor Theater Chicago, IL 60611 You are encouraged to RSVP with friends and guests! I look forward to seeing many of you at the event! Hi everyone, I am extremely pleased that Bert Monroy has accepted the invitation to come speak to us. Bert is in the Photoshop Hal of Fame, and is a world-wide recognized expert on Photoshop. Bert's Hall of Fame entry is here: http://www.photoshop halloffame.com/winne rs/bmonroy.html Here is how Bert describes his talk before us that evening: "Beyond the photo retouching capabilities, Adobe Photoshop is an extraordinary tool for image creation. Using software as his brush and canvas, Bert will offer a Photoshop demonstration that will explain features that are usually ignored by most users. Filters, brushes and layer styles will be taken beyond their face value and turned into tools that adapt to any given situation. Bert will inspire the casual Photoshop enthusiast to take their imagination to new heights." He has used a Mac since 1984, and continues to use Macs as his design tool of choice. He has presented around the world, and published some of the most influential books ever written on Photoshop. You can see his most recent book here: http://www.amazon.co m/Photoshop-Studio-B ert-Monroy-Painting/ dp/0321515870/ref=sr _1_1?ie=UTF8&s=b ooks&qid=1239936 330&sr=8-1 Bert maintains his own web site, and you can see examples of his work here: http://www.bertmonro y.com His most famous image is a hyper-realistic image of the Damen El station in Chicago. It's actually not a photo, it's a creation in Photoshop. One difference is that everything in Damen is clear and sharp, unlike in a photo. You can see various examples of the image on his web site, and he also uses it on the cover of his most recent book. Damen can be viewed here: http://www.bertmonro y.com/fineart/text/f ineart_damen.htm The logistics for this event are: Wednesday, June 3, 2009 7:00 p.m. -8:30 p.m. The Apple Store 2nd Floor 679 North Michigan Avenue Chicago, IL 60611 The event is free and open to the public. You are encouraged and invited to RSVP with guests. I look forward to seeing many of you at this event! Best wishes, Russ Conte Coordinator, Chicago Mac Meetup

Hi everyone, Our main meeting for May, 2009 will be on backups. We're going to look at several different kinds of backups, ranging from how to make a bootable backup, to how to make incremental backups, and also how to make archives. We'll look at different kinds of software and hardware to accomplish these tasks. All hard drives will fail sooner or later. Your best strategy is to have a backup (actually, multiple backups!) and tonight we're going to show you several ways to do this, and let you make up your own mind about which is best for you, or maybe you'll get a taste of what's possible, and find other ways to do backups for yourself. We'll be going out to eat afterward, and you are also welcome to join us for food! Our meeting will be at the Apple Store 679 N. Michigan Avenue 2nd Floor Theater Chicago, IL 60611 We'll be meeting from 7:00 p.m.–8:30 p.m., and then going out to eat afterward. I hope to see many of you at our main meeting for May, 2009! Sincerely, Russ Conte Coordinator, Chicago Mac Meetup
