September 26 2009 Double-Feature Event - Morning Feature - Cloud Computing, Afternoon Feature - Snow Leopard

The September 26 General Meeting will be a double-header event with two presentations by Pi members.

Morning Session - 9:30 a.m.

This month’s General Meeting will be packed with information starting with the usual Q & A session. Organizers encourage attendees/Pi members to submit questions in advance of the meeting at [masked]. The deadline for pre-submitted questions is September 15th; this allows the panel to do their homework on more complex queries. Q&A sessions also accept questions from the audience.

Club announcements follow the Q&A session. A short break allows audience to socialize while technical crew sets up computers, etc, for our featured speaker.

George Mason University Professor Larry Kerschberg, a Pi member, addresses the Cloud Computing phenomena, that is, how you can have access to your data anywhere, anytime on any device. Just think: your Mac, iPhone or iPod touch all singing from the same sheet of music! Topics to be covered include:

  • Billions and billions of servers, e.g., Apple, Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, Amazon, etc.
  • Me and the Cloud -- having your data anywhere all the time
  • Services for iPhone and Macs -- MobileMe synchronization, email, iDisk, Web hosting, photo galleries, Find my iPhone
  • Files backups to the Cloud -- iDisk, SugarSync, Dropbox, etc.

Cloud computing topics on the above list that are not addressed at September meeting due to time limitations will be presented at the October General Meeting on October 24.

The morning session concludes with the Lunch Break. Bring your own or contribute $3 for Domino’s Pizza.

Afternoon Session - 1:00 p.m.

Pi member, Bo Huttinger, does a show-and-tell about what is new with the Mac OS X Snow Leopard operating system. Bo will wow you with installation advice, configuration suggestions, and what is important to know about the August 28 Mac OS X 10.6 release. At the end of the day, you should be adequately armed with enough knowledge to decide if this upgrade is something for you.

The afternoon session ends with door prizes -- Tidbits' book on upgrading to Snow Leopard book and Snow Leopard software.

Also, the Pi will be hosting the George Mason University Mac User Group at this meeting. Come meet more Mac enthusiasts!

Visit for more info on September 26 morning and afternoon activities, including driving and parking information.

Special Note:
There will be no Special Interest Group meetings in afternoon due to Snow Leopard presentation.

For more information on current Pi interests and activities, see the Washington Apple Pi web site. Directions to George Mason's Enterprise Hall as well as on-campus parking options are explained on Apple Pi web site.

See you at George Mason University's Enterprise Hall on September 19!
